Renewable energy content detail

Through Greenfield Light & Power, 100% of the electricity you buy comes from renewable sources. The option you choose determines where those renewable sources are located:

  • Budget Green provides 100% of your electricity from renewable sources from both within and outside of New England.
  • Local Green provides 100% of your electricity from new renewable sources in the New England region (MA Class I RECs).

Buying renewable energy refers to the purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). What are RECs?

Beginning January 2026

Electricity from renewable sources (% of total)

From wind sources outside of New England (National Wind RECs) 31%

* Participants in Local Green receive 100% of their electricity from new renewable sources in the New England region (MA Class I RECs). However, state law also requires all electricity suppliers to purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from other sources, including sources that are not new, are renewable but not clean, such as waste to energy, or are clean but not renewable, such as nuclear. This purchase must be made even if the total number of RECs purchased exceeds 100% of the electricity used by program participants.
