The City of Chelsea is pleased to announce the June 2024 launch of Chelsea Electricity Choice, a type of group electricity buying program from the City for residents and businesses.

Participating in Chelsea Electricity Choice will change the price that Eversource uses to calculate the Supply portion of your electric bill, which is the part of the bill where you pay for the electricity you use. When the program launches, Chelsea Electricity Choice prices will be lower than Eversource’s current residential Basic Service price (though future savings cannot be guaranteed). In addition, the program provides 24 months of electricity price stability, which means protection from winter electricity price spikes.

With the program’s launch, Chelsea joins more than 170 other Massachusetts communities that already have similar active programs.

Three new, consumer-friendly options

Chelsea Electricity Choice offers three options so you can make the choice that is right for you.

New participants will be automatically enrolled in Chelsea Basic, which is the lowest-priced option in the program. Chelsea Standard and Chelsea 100% Green are available by request.

Participate

 Most Chelsea electricity customers will be eligible for automatic enrollment! If you receive a notice in the mail from the City, no action is required. You will automatically receive the Chelsea Electricity Choice price beginning in June. Participation is not required, and you are free to opt out at any time with no fee or penalty. Chelsea customers with a private electricity supply contract are not eligible for automatic enrollment, but requesting enrollment is easy. Learn about enrolling.

How it works

 Chelsea Electricity Choice is a group electricity purchasing program. Participating in Chelsea Electricity Choice will change your electricity supplier and the price Eversource uses to calculate the Supply charge on your electric bill, but participating will not replace Eversource as your electric utility. Make sure you’re enrolled

If you are enrolled, Chelsea Electricity Choice will be integrated into your existing Eversource electric bill beginning in June 2024. Your supplier will appear as Chelsea Electricity Choice – Direct Energy.

Savings cannot be guaranteed

Please note that, while Chelsea Electricity Choice will offer the potential for savings when compared with Eversource’s Basic Service price, there is no guarantee of savings. This is because Eversource’s fixed Basic Service prices change every 6 months for residential and small business customers and every 3 months for large business customers and future Eversource prices are not known.

Protect your Eversource account number

Eversource will NEVER knock on your door or call you to talk about your electricity bill. If Eversource wishes to discuss your bill, they will do so in writing.

All communication about Chelsea Electricity Choice will bear the City Seal and the name “Chelsea Electricity Choice.” Only provide your Eversource account number if you are ready to change your electricity supplier.
