Welcome!

The Town of Sherborn is developing a plan for an electricity aggregation program called Sherborn Power Choice. A type of group electricity buying program, Sherborn Power Choice will provide our community with an opportunity to increase the amount of renewable energy in our electricity supply and create new electricity supply choices. Sherborn Power Choice will be a Town alternative to the commercial electricity offers that many of us receive in the mail and over the phone, but without high pressure or fees.

Aggregation Plan review and approval

Sherborn’s Aggregation Plan document describes how the program will work and meet regulatory requirements. The Aggregation Plan was presented to the public and made available for comment from March 1 through March 29, 2021. The Aggregation Plan was submitted to the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU) for review on May 14, 2021. Once the DPU approves the Plan, Sherborn Power Choice can launch. The regulatory review and approval process is expected to require several months.

Cleaner electricity

Sherborn Power Choice participants will automatically receive more electricity from renewable sources than is required by state law. The specific amount is still to be determined. You will also have the option to receive 100% of your electricity from renewable sources or to receive just the minimum amount required by state law. (Visit the Definitions page to learn about renewable electricity.)

Stable prices

The program will aim to provide competitive, long-term electricity supply pricing. Price stability will make the program different from Eversource’s Basic Service prices, which change every 6 months or less, and from many electricity supply offers in the marketplace. However, because Eversource’s Basic Service prices change and future prices are not known, savings compared with Eversource’s prices cannot be guaranteed.

Consumer protections

Sherborn Power Choice is being designed to protect Sherborn consumers. The program will include no hidden fees, and you will have the freedom to opt out of the program at any time with no penalty.

Details such as prices, how much renewable electricity will be included, and when the program will launch will be determined after citizen comment and after Sherborn’s Aggregation Plan receives approval from state regulators. Learn about the implementation process.

How electricity aggregation works

Through Sherborn Power Choice, Sherborn will choose its own electricity supplier and determine the price that Eversource uses to calculate the supply services portion of your electricity bill. However, Sherborn Power Choice will not replace Eversource as Sherborn’s electricity utility. If you choose to participate, you will remain an Eversource electricity customer with no interruption to your electricity. Eversource will continue to deliver your electricity, they will continue to send your electricity bill, and you will continue to call them if your power goes out. If you are eligible for any discount from Eversource, such as a low-income discount, you will continue to receive that discount.

Enrollment will be automatic for most electricity customers in Sherborn (though not for customers who have already signed an electricity supply contract). If your account is eligible for automatic enrollment, you will receive a notification in the mail from the Town before being enrolled with details like pricing and program options.

Participation is never required. While Sherborn Power Choice will have an automatic enrollment model in accordance with state law,
you will be able to opt out before being enrolled and any time after enrollment with no penalty.
